The airport countdown, read as a business story
Published 3 August 2026. Facts verified to 27 July 2026 unless dated otherwise.
Forget the ribbon. The question is what starts moving, and for whom, when Navagam's runway opens for scheduled operations.
Dholera airport is targeted to begin operations in September to October 2026. The first AAI trial landing, a VT-CNS aircraft, was completed on 4 June 2026. Phase 1 cost is about Rs 1,305 crore with a cargo terminal of roughly 2,500 sq m.
The cargo case leads
Semiconductor supply chains are air-freight intensive: tools arrive by air, spares arrive by air, and finished product often leaves by air. A fab with a cargo-capable runway inside its own corridor is a structural cost advantage, and the ~2,500 sq m cargo terminal is the piece of the airport that earns first. Passenger traffic follows industry, not the other way around.
The capacity dispute, kept honest
Published passenger capacity figures disagree: 2 million, 2.8 million and 3.5 million all circulate. This record uses about 2 million initially and labels the figure disputed pending DIACL confirmation REPORTED. A business record that averages disputed numbers is just a slower brochure.
What changes on day one
- Logistics windows: the fab construction site and future operations gain an air option 20 odd minutes away instead of an Ahmedabad round trip.
- Executive access: site-selection visits stop being a day-long commitment, which matters more for conversion than it sounds.
- The Embraer option: the reported Adani + Embraer final-assembly MoUMemorandum of understanding: a stated intent to engage, not a contract or delivered capital. REPORTED is written around this airport existing; operations beginning is its first precondition.
The operations window is a target TARGET and will be scored on the promise vs delivery ledger when it closes, either way.
