Ultrapure water: the fab's largest and least discussed input

A fab's most consumed material is not silicon or exotic gas. It is water, purified to a degree that would make bottled mineral water look like mud, and it is a real constraint on where fabs can be built.

Purity, not just volume

Semiconductor fabs use ultrapure water for wafer rinsing at every stage. It is produced on site through multi-stage treatment that strips dissolved minerals, organics, dissolved gases, bacteria and particles far beyond drinking-water standards, and fabs typically recycle a substantial share of it.

Why ordinary clean water is useless here

Water rinses wafers after almost every wet process step. Anything dissolved in that water, minerals, organics, trace metals, will be left behind on the wafer surface when it dries, and at the scales involved those residues are defects. Ultrapure water production therefore removes essentially everything: ions through reverse osmosis and ion exchange, organics through oxidation and adsorption, dissolved gases through degasification, and bacteria and particles through fine filtration and ultraviolet treatment. The result is aggressive, chemically hungry water that must be handled in specially chosen piping because it will slowly attack ordinary materials.

The volumes, and the recycling

A large fab's daily water requirement is substantial enough to matter at municipal scale, which is why fab siting is a water conversation as much as a land conversation. The industry's answer over the last two decades has been aggressive reclaim: capturing rinse water, treating it and returning it to the ultrapure loop, so that the volume drawn from external sources is far smaller than the volume used internally. Modern plants publish recycling rates as a headline sustainability metric precisely because the raw consumption figure alarms people.

Why this is a siting constraint, honestly stated

Water supply is one of the few genuinely hard constraints on fab location. A region can build roads, train workers and offer incentives, but it cannot conjure a reliable bulk water supply. For any greenfield fab region, the questions that matter are the source, the assured allocation, the treatment capacity and the drought resilience of the arrangement.

For Dholera specifically, this record does not publish water allocation figures, because it has not seen dated, official, site-specific documentation of them. That absence is itself worth stating plainly rather than filling with plausible numbers, and it is the first question any serious industrial occupant should put in writing to the authority, as our siting guide recommends.

The wastewater half

What comes out matters as much as what goes in. Process wastewater carries chemistry that requires treatment before discharge, and fabs run their own industrial wastewater plants alongside their water plants. For a region hosting a fab cluster, effluent infrastructure is a shared-services question, and one that tends to be settled quietly in engineering documents rather than loudly in announcements.
